Dr. Fei “Chris” Shen presented his project on gauging public opinion in Hong Kong by using text data collected from online discussion platforms and comment sections of news media. Despite the many technical obstacles, including word segmentation of Cantonese language and quantification of public sentiments, the project successfully attained its objects, indicating the possibility to predict the public opinion by using text data. This seminar was for the first time held on Zoom and attended by around 80 participants.
