COM Successfully Hosted CityU Summer School ’15: BIG(GER) Data Research

The inaugural City U Summer School in Social Science Research was held from June 15-19th at the Department of Media and Communication, with more than 25 students and faculty participating. Professors Frank Boster (Michigan State University) and George Barnett (U of California, Davis) held workshops on meta-analysis and communication network analysis, respectively and Drs. Chis Fei Shen and Marko Skoric from City U both shared their insights about computational and comparative methods of social scientific inquiry.

The Summer School participants included City U doctoral students as well as PhD and masters students from some of the most renowned institutions in the US, Europe and Asia, including the University of Southern California, European University Institute, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, and Nanyang Technological University. The students also attended the 2015 Workshop on Computational Communication Research, organized by Professor Jonathan Zhu (City U), which was held right after the official Summer School program ended, from June 18-20th.

The Summer School was successfully concluded by a wine reception, which was followed by a student-led evening trip to the nearby island of Cheung Chau on the weekend.
